September 11, 2001 – 24 YEARS…NEVER FORGOTTEN

The 343 Beach Smoke is a gathering of Brothers remembering the fallen 343 Firefighters that were murdered on September 11, 2001. Since that day many more brothers were lost due to their illnesses suffered from that event, they too will never be forgotten. We also pay tribute to all other firefighters and servicemen who made the sacrifices following that terrible day, they too will never be forgotten. Retired and active members from any departments are welcome to come and join us at our Smokes. Since we started this tribute in 2013, many have joined us, and many have returned. We will post the future dates in our blogs. Feel free to stop and post on this site and discuss any fire related topics and the guys will be more than happy to respond. Just keep it in tradition, respect your brothers, everyone is entitled to their opinion. There is always something you can learn and pass on. Thanks and Be Safe!

SPECIAL TRIBUTE:

Following our last 343 Beach Smoke Event, sad news came about. Within one week of each other, we lost two giants, Aaron Clarke and Boone Cutler. To us and many more, they were “Men Of Honor”. They were part of our Beach Smoke Community and much more.

Firefighter Aaron M. Clark, Rescue Company 1, formerly a member of Ladder 4 in Midtown Manhattan, lost his courageous battle with cancer. Aaron 51, passed away on September 23, 2025.  FDNY Firefighter, appointed January 21, 2008 where he dedicated 17 years of his life.A proud and decorated member of the FDNY Emerald Society Pipes & Drums, Aaron carried his pride for the Department and its traditions with honor. Aaron found joy and camaraderie in sharing his love of bagpiping with his fellow firefighters. He proudly served our country as a United States Marine and continued to advocate for his fellow service members through his volunteer work. He was the primary ambassador of the Spartan Sword and the Spartan Axe assisting veterans struggling with PTSD and suicide prevention, traveling across the country, spreading the word. He also gave his time to Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and served as a peer counselor with Friends of Firefighters. Aaron helped untold numbers through his compassion, strength, and wise counsel. Whether sitting quietly in support or offering words that could calm a storm, he was always there – fully present, fully giving. Anyone who knew Aaron has a story of his selflessness to tell. His larger-than-life smile and unwavering generosity can never be replaced. Aaron leaves behind a legacy and an impression that will remain with us forever.

“Aaron was, and will always be, a giant on this job”, per his peers. His actions, compassion, and dedication touched countless lives.

Besides his military veteran suicide prevention efforts, He was also deeply committed to supporting others through his involvement in firefighter and first responder mental health advocacy.

We met Aaron almost a decade ago and immediately became part of our family. He sent us a piece of Steel from the WTC and we made up a display case so we know Aaron is with us at all times.

Aaron is survived by his wife, Sarah; his brother, Evan; his sister, Ramie of; his mother, Rikki, and grandmother, Norma. He is preceded in death by his father, Arthur Clark.

Boone Cutler, author of the Spartan Pledge, died September 18, 2025. Boone Cutler was an author, columnist, music video director and Warfighter Rights leader that has become the first nationally recognized radio talk show personality who is also a combat veteran from the current war. He began writing his Iraq War inspired novel “Voodoo in Sadr City” during his combat tour in Iraq and later completed it during his two-year recovery from wartime injuries at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, during the Neglect Scandal of 2007.
After his recovery Boone began to see a major void in the Warfighter community and decided to approach Fox News affiliate 99.1 FM Talk with the concept of a new show that focused on national, international and social events based on the Warfighter’s perspective.
In 2011, his show “Tipping Point with Boone Cutler” began and gave him a weekly stage for his raw Paratrooper, no-holds-barred style, quickly becoming a hit over the air waves and online with curious mainstream American listeners, and his fellow Warfighters.
In June 2014, “Tipping Point with Boone Cutler” began its partnership with KNEWS 107.3 FM in Reno, NV where it can be heard every Saturday.
In 2010, Boone founded the National Warfighter Symposium to bring much needed attention to Warfighter issues such as post combat life changes and especially the alarming Warfighter suicide and homelessness rates. America currently loses at least 23 Warfighters (22 veterans + 1 active duty) to suicide every single day. This is a number that Boone has made his mission to combat by his creation of “The Spartan Pledge” for fellow Warfighters to who promise not to take their own lives and instead vow to find a new mission to help one another. He had chosen GallantFew.org, founded by Ranger Karl Monger as his signature charity.
In 2012, Boone was diagnosed with Early-Onset Parkinson’s Disease secondary to a blast-injury in Iraq and is currently starting to campaign for more awareness on the issue of degenerative brain disease in the Warfighter Community.
Governor Sandoval of Nevada appointed Boone to the Inter-agency Council on Veteran Affairs for the 2012/2013 term working with the council helping establish the objectives of The Green Zone Initiative based on the needs of Nevada’s veterans. Boone believes in healing through the Art’s and has remained periodically involved over the years helping to develop the Warfighter Community message as music video producer / director for REDCON-1 MUSIC GROUP after seeing first-hand the healing effects of music therapy.
In 2014, Boone became the national spokesperson for the Warfighter Rights’ Movement whose mission is to end Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder phobia that results in discrimination against Warfighters in employment, housing and the judicial process. He served as a PSYOP Team Sergeant in Iraq, following which he suffered from some orthopedic and traumatic brain injuries, and was later diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Boone Cutler became a popular face for his talk radio show titled Tipping Point, which aired between 2011 and 2016. He was also invited to the VetXpo conference in Dallas in 2019.Notably, his organization, The Spartan Pledge, was featured in different spots, including multiple ceremonies and the NASCAR vehicle.During his time in the military, Boone Cutler was also a part of the 301st Tactical Psychological Operations Company. His duty was to fight against insurgents, which also left him with a bad head trauma as a result of everyday combat missions. He was a spokesperson for the Warfighter Rights’ Movement and was appointed to the inter-agency council on veteran affairs. He even formed the National Warfighter Symposium.Boone’s impact on the Spartan Sword mission and on the lives of countless veterans was impressive. Nearly a decade ago, when the devastating impact of overprescribed opioids, SSRIs, and benzodiazepines on veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan was still little understood, Boone recognized both the dangers of these medications and their tragic connection to the disproportionately high suicide rate among post-9/11 service members. He often reminded us, “Our medical establishment is more effective at killing us than the Taliban.” Boone’s own journey reflected both sacrifice and resilience. He began his military career as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne, and like so many others, re-enlisted after 9/11. While serving in Iraq, he suffered a traumatic brain injury and spent nearly two years recovering at Walter Reed, where he became dependent on what he called the “Zombie Cocktail” of prescribed medications. Refusing to accept this fate, Boone checked himself into the VA hospital in Reno, NV, and made the difficult choice to go cold-turkey off of those medications. From that trial emerged the idea that became his greatest legacy: the Spartan Pledge.

Though Boone authored the Pledge, he never claimed it as his own, describing himself as simply the messenger. “I will not take my own life by my own hand without talking to my Battle Buddy first. My mission is to find a mission to support my warfighter family.”

Through these two sentences, Boone gave thousands of veterans a lifeline—urging them not to isolate, but to reconnect with their brothers and sisters, and to rediscover purpose through service to others. Soon, the pledge found its symbol. With steel donated from the wreckage of the World Trade Center and forged by a veteran blacksmith, the Spartan Sword was born, later to be followed with the Spartan Axe. Today, it travels to veteran events across the country, carrying Boone’s message of hope and solidarity. Time and again, Boone personally carried that message—often dropping everything to be present for an individual veteran in crisis, no matter their religion, race, or political beliefs. His example of compassion and selflessness is one we hope more will carry forward by asking, “What would Boone do?” before acting in haste. Just one day before his passing, Boone was preparing to carry the Spartan Sword in the National Veterans Parade in Washington, D.C., as a guest of the Grunt Style Foundation. He was overjoyed at the chance to share the pledge with a wider audience than our small nonprofit could ever reach. Although Boone will not march on that day, his beloved wife, Malisa, will carry the Spartan Sword in his honor.

September 2025 343 Beach smoke

Great evening in the books! Through the grace of God, the weather held up and we had another outstanding show of members. With the 24th year of that tragic day, our group came together to reflect and remember all those who were murdered on that day in 2001. We also honored all those who have past since, both first responders and all military personnel who went down range and made their sacrifices. NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN.

We welcomed some FNG’s along with a visit from some of the members of DAR, The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. DAR is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s service organization founded in 1890 dedicated to historic preservation, education, and patriotism. These women have a love of country by supporting military personnel, veterans, and their families, as well as assisting naturalized citizens. Their work includes protecting and preserving historic sites, buildings, and artifacts, as well as supporting genealogy and historical research. They also provide educational programs and resources, awarding scholarships, and sponsoring contests focused on American history and the American Revolution.  Since the Spanish American war DAR has been volunteering. They also contribute over $1 million annually to support five schools that provide for a variety of special student needs. DAR awards $150,000 annually in scholarships to high school graduates, supporting music, law, nursing, and medical school students. They support our military, both at home and oversees. Many have escorted veterans on Honor Flights. They came to support the 343 BeachSmoke and also pay tribute to all the fallen of 9-11 and post 9-11. It was great to have them stop by and thank you for your support and goodies.

.

Food, spirits, cigars, raffle prizes, laughs and tears carried us through the evening. Thanks to Vinny, Chicci from Sunrise FD for the great tumblers, plaque and awesome subs. Thanks to Tunnel to Towers for their donations of t-shirts, hats and challenge coins. Brian FDNY always bringing great cookies and everyone els chipping in to make the night great. All pictures can be accessed from the top of main page.

. .

Ok next one will be in February, date to be announced in December. Hope everyone has a great and safe holiday season.

March 2025

      Capt. William “Bill” Gustin

On March 16, 2025, the Fire Service suffered a tragic loss. Capt. William “Bill” Gustin a fire veteran for 47 years, he had joined the Miami-Dade Fire Department in 1978, where he rose through the ranks and left us as Capt. Bill Gustin. There are many nouns and adjectives I could use to describe Bill, and I am sure of this, that the many lives and careers he influenced can add many more. Teacher, author, leader, philosopher and mentor. Passionate, confident, tenacious, compassionate, serious, hilarious and a Great F#*kn Fireman. IYKTYK. We can’t judge anybody, we can’t read minds, but we can stay close to each other so maybe, just maybe, there is a small opportunity to get one second to open up to your buddy about what is going on. Be there for each other.    The Spartan Pledge:

“I will not take my own life by my own hand until I talk to my battle buddy first. My Mission is to find a mission to help my warfighter family”    – Boone Cutler

January, 2019 343 Beach Smoke was a great evening, welcomed returning brothers and FNG’s to our first Beach Smoke of 2019. Great show for a special evening. This evening was dedicated to a fallen brother, William “Bill Jumbo” Elliott, who died in the line of duty while serving on the Pompano Beach FD Jan. 6, 2012. Also remembered was Captain John Moshella of E-26, who passed due to his 9/11 related illness. Capt. Moshella was added to the remembrance wall at FDNY Headquarters, sadly it keeps on growing.

Also paid tribute to LODD Firefighter Steven Pollard, Ladder 170. Following his father’s footsteps, who was a retired 32 year veteran Raymond G Pollard, and his brother 11 yr. veteran Raymond G Pollard, Jr., FF Pollard was “full of promise” quoted by many who knew him. Known for his strength, speed and smile. Thousands mourned him, he was the 1,151st FDNY member to die in the line of duty. Another gone too soon.

February 343Beach Smoke news:

Following our Pledge of Allegiance, we started off with a moment of silence for the 17 lost victims, as well as the additional 16 injured and the multiple numbers that are mentally scarred from the tragedy that occurred on Feb. 14th, 2018 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS in Parkland.

I listened to the scanner as it was developing and watched the visual on tv, nothing but solid, efficient, coordinated team effort was shown during this massive incident. Great job by ALL! Our prayers and thoughts were sent out to all families of the victims as well as all first responders. Please reach out and offer an open ear to all first responders in our community, this burden cannot be carried out alone.

As always we remembered all the fallen brothers. A few new brothers from Palm Beach County, Pembroke Pines and FDNY retiree Vinnie Diaz joined us. Special thanks to brothers Dave and Jimmy for playing the pipes in remembrance of the fallen. We also celebrated Brother FF Scott Friend retiring from Pompano Beach Fire-Rescue after 33 yrs. of service. Enjoy your retirement brother. Great time had by all. Thanks to all that brought great food, spirits and stories. The newbies participated in The Spartan Pledge and received their card and pins.

Special prayers to NYC and the victims of the terrorist attack.

October Beach Smoke news… Was there a mirage on the beach that evening… or was that really “Sally”. Chief Mike “Sally” Salzano made his debut with open arms, glad to see you brother! Thanks to all who came and enjoyed the great food, spirits, cigars and brotherhood! Brother Rossi’s Dad came and joined us, Mr. Rossi, aka”Paisan” was partying like he was 21. Great time had by all! Thanks to brothers for generous donations for a “Brother in Need”. It was well received. If you missed it, you also missed… sausage and peppers (with Potatoes NY style), meatballs, wings, jerk wings, Chic’s subs, cannolis, flan, sand beer dogs, did I forget to mention Bro Rossi baked Pumpkin Bread, although they broke his balls… was it really ginger bread? Raffles were free, Bro Art was raffling everything, cigars, cutters, shirts, booze, and sand. A special donation was thrown in the pot by Bro Ira G. (Thanks from all) a hand forged and handmade knife ..inner … Bro PaulCannoli. All pics posted on Oct page. Be Safe!

Prayers going out to Las Vegas Tragedy victims and families! Great job by all first responders, veterans and citizens who stepped up!

Sept 14th Beach Smoke was compromised by a force of nature we will remember as IRMA! Our prayers and thoughts to all who were affected by her wrath. Many members went to the aid of others in many places, because that’s what they do! God Bless Them. The Beaches were closed even on the night of the smoke, but brothers that were able to came to de-stress. We could not let September go by without our gathering for the 343. 32 FDNY members names were added to the FDNY Headquarters Memorial Wall, it now stands with 160 casualties from WTC related illnesses.

Many thanks to our brothers from Miramar and others for making the trip. Brother Rossi kicked ass with his smokey ribs for the boys. Thanks to all others for the pulled pork, pulled chicken, pizza, flan and hooch! We had food for an army! Did I mentioned these guys had to come in to the beach in stealth mode, dodging the authorities…lol! After the disastrous Storm, the Beach was tranquil, the sea was calm, but it was the sky that delivered the message that evening. Just as we did the memorial ritual: taps, the 4/5 bells, pipes, prayer and silence, from the horizon the rays came over us. (see picture above with no filters). To the 343 and others that followed, as well as all the lives lost from the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and every military member who made sacrifices, from supreme… to wounded… to surviving…YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!! GOD BLESS THE USA AND THE FLAG of the United States of America.

FF “Vince” Castelly Story

Our June  343 BeachSmoke will be for Vince. We will be passing the boot so come prepared, thanks in advance!

The following was written by Brother Mike “Sally” Salzano, Ft Lauderdale Battalion Chief:

FF Sauvens “Vince” Castelly was involved in a horrific Motor Vehicle Accident after working Rescue Co. 202 on May 17th 2017. On his way home, while driving west on Northlake Boulevard, a vehicle struck Vince, which caused his car to strike a tree and roll over. Unfortunately, Vince was trapped underneath the car and had to be extricated by the West Palm Beach Fire Department and flown to St. Mary’s Hospital via Trauma Hawk.

Vince is currently in critical but stable condition with various serious traumatic injuries. Those injuries include multiple broken bones, a broken sternum, broken cheek bones and catastrophic trauma to Cervical Nerves C5, C6, and C7.

Vince started his career in Fort Lauderdale on May 14th 2007 and just celebrated his 10 year anniversary. Currently, Vince holds the bid on Rescue Co. 246 and is a Hazardous Materials Firefighter while also frequently upgrading to the positions of Driver Engineer and Captain. Vince was in line to be promoted to Driver Engineer within the next few months.

Vince is quiet, caring and humble and would never ask for support. Our efforts here will allow the Castelly family to focus on Vince’s recovery.

We are asking everyone to show their love and support for Vince and his family, during this incredibly difficult journey. Not only will Vince be faced with a long road to recovery, both Vince and his Wife Naomie are expecting their second child in next 2 months. Vince and his family are in for the fight of their lives and will need an incredible amount of support, love and prayers.

Update by Brother Mike “SALLY” Salzano: Vinny’s surgery went well today. We will post more details as soon as the family is 100% briefed.

The amount of love and support is overwhelming and also contagious. The #CASTELLYSTRONG movement has reached as far as London, Argentina and Brazil as well as firehouses throughout the Country.

Thanks Bob well done! a couple of FDNY retirees from Manhattan joined us during the memorial and hung around and shot the shit with the guys. They said they would join us in the future. Joe and Vinny worked Engine 23 Manhattan.

We added a new flag to our ensemble, flying the RED BANDANNA, representing Welles Crowther, a volunteer Firefighter, equities trader in the South Tower on 9-11. Saving at least 18 people and with an opportunity to save himself, he chose the latter and attempted to save more when the Tower collapsed. He was about to leave his trader job and was looking forward to pursue his dream with the FDNY. His story was told on ESPN and in the renown best seller entitled, Red Bandanna: A life, A choice, A legacy by Tom Rinaldi. Truly and inspiring and emotional story. I read it in one afternoon. Put it on your reading list.

Past 343 Beach Smoke Notes: (Sept 22nd, 2016)

Special Thanks to All Brothers who made it. Great to see New arrivals from Brothers retired to New FNG’s !!!

Special Surprise Guest was Jimmy D.  aka “The Pope of Brooklyn”, he surprised the hell out of all of us. Jimmy D, always bearing gifts brought programs for the 343 Memorial at St Patricks Cathedral. Each booklet had pictures of the 343 members and many beautiful words from many distinguished guests. Also B/C Troy Cool made his first appearance, great to have them both!

343stpattys                  metroyjim

Thanks for the rest of our supporters who made it through to the event threatened by storms. Below is a copy of the words prior to Hearing from Chief Croker, Taps, 4 – 5s (Bells), “Going Home” performed by FDNY Emerald Society Pipes and Drums and the pledge of Allegiance to our Colors followed by a Prayer from “Heavy” Mike G.

…Welcome and thanks for joining us at the 343 Beach Smoke – a special evening remembering 15 years since 9-11. Welcome first timers and returning brothers and special guests. * Surprise Visit from the Pope of Brooklyn. Jimmy D. Gentlemen, statistically there were an estimated 14,000 people in the towers that morning. A little more than 11,000 people survived that day due to the sacrifices of many.

71 Law Enforcement Officers, including NYPD, Port Authority PD and various other agencies. 343 Brothers from the FDNY, some of which we knew, trained with and some were personal friends of yours. Names such as Andy Fredericks, Tim McSweeney, Chris Blackwell, Thomas Foley, Dennis Mojica, Paddy Brown and Ray Downey Sr., to name a few. Mentors, Legends and Brothers!!! Since 9-11, 127 more lives were claimed from working on the pile.

2,606 civilians lost at the Towers, 246 in 4 Planes, and 125 at the Pentagon. (No Mention or figures include Scumbags who flew planes)

Then came our military stepping up. 7,008 military members were lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. Did you know that we also lost 6,900 Contractors as well?

Another high percentage of military died since returning home to the states. Drug Overdoses, vehicle crashes and suicides. We are past the 3,000 mark since 2001. Well over 200,000 vets were diagnosed with PTSD.

SPECIAL ATTENTION:

Over the past five Beach Smokes some of us had taken the Spartan Pledge. The Spartan Pledge is to lend a helping hand to members who struggle from PTSD, depression, and other demons that may haunt them. We joined this fight because it has hit home, several tragic incidents have affected our lives. Our FF community has started to document these incidents since 2012. The Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance is on it. In 2012, 81 members took their lives, 69 in 2013, 112 in 2014, 131 in 2015, in 2016 the number is 96 and there are still 3 months left. It is our job, For we are true brothers that are always on the job, on duty, off duty and retired we never stop. It is our duty, to lend a helping hand or open ear and give the support to our First Responders, our Military personnel and our immediate families in order to reduce the number of these tragedies. So get your pins, pledge cards, promote it, pass it on and support it…

Another tragedy recently struck our Firefighter Community when Battalion Chief Dave Dangerfield left us after suffering with PTSD, Saturday October 15th.  Dave worked for Indian River County Fire Rescue, he also was a Fire Academy Instructor, Dive Rescue Instructor, Mentor and a respected firefighter. Many of his peers did not know he was fighting with PTSD. He was loved and his friendship was valued by many. A service will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Community Church, 1901 23rd St, Vero Beach, FL 32960

RIP Chief

daviddangerfield  David Robert Dangerfield

Time to talk to your brothers and sisters, open a conversation, reach out. Ask them to take the Spartan Pledge.                                    Too Many ..Too Soon.

All participants received our Spartan Pledge pins and Oath cards at the last 343 Beach Smoke. Many giveaways followed our memorial.

Our Blue Thin Line Flag supporting our Brothers in Blue was added to our staff, two months ago.

Camp’s sausage and peppers were great, as well as, Brooklyn Sicilian pies, chased with stories, spirits and stogies.

Three promotions were celebrated, Mike “Heavy” Gurr and Dave “Shef” Sheflin both promoted to Battalion Chiefs in Pompano, while Mark Rossi was “made” Captain in Fort Lauderdale, he is vacationing with other goombahs in Italy. Congrats to All!

Special prayers went out to Capt. Paul Blake and FF “Pauly Strong” who are battling diseases. Prayers for them and their families.

Sadly, following our event this past week we lost three members from our Firefighter Community, Miami Brother FF C. Davis who was senselessly killed in a drive by and FF’s Chris Leach and Jerry Fickes from a building collapse in Wilmington, DE. FDNY Bravest Battalion Chief Michael J. Fahy, Battalion 19 killed in an explosion in the Bronx. RIP Brothers!
